titleOfInvention | High density microwalled expanded polytetrafluoroethylene tubular structure |
abstract | High density micro-wall ePTFE structure having high radial strength and high suture holding power and method for producing the same. The material of the present invention also achieves a significant reduction in wall thickness and porosity. The process involves the treatment of standard extruded ePTFE implants. The implant is placed in a restraint tube and balloon inflated to about 4 times its original diameter (20), and then placed on a mandrel (30) of the same size for an interference fit. The load mandrel is placed in the calendering device (40) and the entire implant wall is moved between the metal plates until fully calendered. The loading mandrel is then placed in a furnace or oven at a temperature above the crystallization melting point of PTFE (80) to fix the change within the microstructure. The final product has the desired properties of thin wall, high density, above average radial strength and excellent suture retention. |
