Recombinant Myxococcus host cells can be used to produce polypotides containing epothilones and epothilone analogs that can be purified from the fermentation broth and crystallized. The present invention relates to a recombinant expression vector comprising a recombinant expression vector encoding a heterologous PKS gene and producing a polyketide synthesized on these vectors by the PKS enzyme encoded by the gene. A recombinant host cell is provided. In a preferred embodiment, the host cell is from the genus Myxococcus or Stigmatella. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the host cells are M. Stipitatus, M .; fulbus, M .; xanthus, M .; virscens, S.M. erecta, and S.E. aurantiaca. |
