abstract The present invention relates to a medicament for modulating excitatory synaptic transmission comprising a compound having α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor activating properties as an active ingredient, and to the production of such a medicament. The present invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient, and methods of modulating excitatory synaptic transmission comprising administering such compositions. Also provided are methods of screening for agents for modulating excitatory synaptic transmission, including using the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor activation properties as an indicator. INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY The present invention is useful for prevention and / or treatment of brain disorders including dementia, amnesia, manic depression, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, and psychosomatic disorders.
