abstract | The present invention relates to the finding that there is an intermediate differentiation stage pancreatic stem cell that can be grown in a stable manner in successive serial passages while maintaining insulin production in response to glucose. These cells are advantageous in that they are both expandable and stable in culture, and are advantageous in that they can be induced into a late developmental stage, ie, prototypical islet cells. The present invention further provides culture techniques for selecting cells at these intermediate differentiation stages and for selectively removing early or late stage pancreatic cells. |
