An isolated mammalian DNA molecule encoding a mutant γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor subunit, wherein the mutation event selected from the group consisting of a point mutation, a deletion, an insertion and a rearrangement. An isolated mammalian DNA molecule, or an otherwise functional fragment or homologue thereof, characterized in that said mutation event has occurred and disrupts the function of the assembled GABA receptor.
