An object of the present invention is to provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal element which has no alignment defect such as a zigzag defect and has a high display contrast ratio. In a ferroelectric liquid crystal device having a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer between two substrates having electrodes, at least one of the substrates has a liquid crystal alignment film, and the liquid crystal alignment film is formed of a polymerizable monomer. Is applied on the substrate, a photo-alignment function is imparted by light irradiation, and then the polymerizable monomer is polymerized by irradiating heat or light to obtain a film thickness of 2 nm or more and 12 nm or more. A ferroelectric liquid crystal device according to the following liquid crystal alignment film, wherein said polymerizable monomer is a dichroic dye having two or more polymerizable groups in one molecule.
