PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polyethylene having both moldability of low density polyethylene, mechanical strength and melt stretchability of high density polyethylene and linear low density polyethylene, and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: In the presence of a macromonomer (an ethylene polymer having a vinyl group at a terminal), ethylene and optionally an olefin having 3 or more carbon atoms are converted into a component (a) a specific metallocene compound and a component (b) an organic compound. Polymerization is carried out using a catalyst comprising a clay mineral treated with the above to produce a branched polyethylene having specific physical properties.
