A biaxially oriented polyester film having substantially no oligomer precipitates on the film surface and excellent in magnetic recording characteristics when used as a substrate for a magnetic recording medium, optical characteristics and gas barrier properties when used as an optical substrate, and A manufacturing method is provided. SOLUTION: The polyester comprises a polyester having a phosphorus atom content of 125 to 500 ppm in terms of phosphorus atomic weight and an intrinsic viscosity of 0.50 or more and 0.75 or less, and the amount of oligomers deposited on the surface is 0.7 mg / m 2 or less.
