abstract An object of the present invention is to provide a method and an apparatus for purifying wastewater using a combination of a separation technique utilizing the properties of an ionic liquid and a decomposition technique utilizing an oxidation-reduction reaction by irradiation with radiation. A wastewater containing harmful organic substances and an ionic liquid are continuously brought into contact with each other in a countercurrent relationship to extract and separate the organic substances into the ionic liquid. A method of purifying wastewater comprising: irradiating ultrasonic waves on at least a part of the fluid in contact with the wastewater and the ionic liquid, further evaporating the organic matter from the ionic liquid containing the extracted organic matter. And an apparatus for decomposing the vaporized organic matter by irradiation with radiation. [Selection diagram] Fig. 1
