abstract A living polymerization method in which the molecular weight is regulated by living polymerization of a vinyl compound and a polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution can be obtained. The living polymerization method according to the present invention comprises (A) an initiator comprising a predetermined halogenated hydrocarbon or a sulfonyl halide compound, and (B) (B1) a group VIII element of the periodic table as a central metal. The unsaturated carboxylic acid or its derivative is polymerized in the presence of a living polymerization initiator comprising a metal complex and an activator comprising a predetermined Lewis acid (B2).
