abstract An apparatus and method for detecting a magnetic field that has a smaller switching offset, is non-volatile, and consumes less power than existing magnetic field sensors. The invention includes a magnetic device (300). The magnetic device (300) includes a pinning layer (310). The embodiment further includes a plurality of ferromagnetic layers (322, 324, 326), at least one of the ferromagnetic layers being adjacent to the pinning layer (310). A spacer layer (340) is adjacent to at least one other ferromagnetic layer of the plurality of ferromagnetic layers. A sense layer (330) is adjacent to the spacer layer (340). The magnetic device has a Neel magnetic field between the sense layer (330) and the plurality of ferromagnetic layers (322, 324, 326) in a direction opposite to the demagnetizing field between the plurality of ferromagnetic layers (322, 324, 326) and the sense layer (330).
