The present invention provides a gene involved in polysaccharide production by a methanol-assimilating bacterium, and a method for using the same. SOLUTION: The DNA encoding the protein described in any one of the following (A) to (D) is used to improve or reduce the ability of methanol-assimilating bacteria to produce polysaccharides. (A) A protein having a specific amino acid sequence. (B) A protein comprising an amino acid sequence containing substitution, deletion, insertion or addition of one or more amino acids in the amino acid sequence of (A), and having a polysaccharide-forming activity. (C) a protein having another specific amino acid sequence. (D) A protein comprising an amino acid sequence containing substitution, deletion, insertion or addition of one or more amino acids in the amino acid sequence of (C), and having a polysaccharide-forming activity.
