The present invention relates to obtaining compositions and methods for diagnosing and treating tumor cell growth and proliferation in mammals, including humans. The method is based on the identification of genes that are amplified in the genome of tumor cells. Such gene amplification is expected to be associated with overexpression of the gene product compared to normal cells of the same tissue type and contribute to tumorigenesis. Therefore, the protein encoded by the amplified gene is considered to be useful for diagnosis and treatment (including prevention) of certain cancers, and acts to predict the prognosis of tumor treatment.
