abstract A method for producing an optically active 6,6'-dimethyl-1,1'-biphenyl-2,2'-diol derivative, and an optically active 5,5'-substituted-6,6 'useful as a raw material thereof. -Dimethyl-1,1'-biphenyl-2,2'-diol derivative and a method for producing the same. A racemic 5,5'-substituted-6,6'-dimethyl-1,1'-biphenyl-2,2'-diol derivative is derived into a phosphate ester with an optically active secondary alcohol. Optical splitting. It is hydrogenolyzed to synthesize an optically active 5,5′-substituted-6,6′-dimethyl-1,1′-biphenyl-2,2′-diol derivative. Further, the above optically active 5,5′-substituted-6,6′-dimethyl-1,1′-biphenyl-2,2′-diol derivative is dealkylated to give 6,6′-dimethyl-1,1′-diol. Produce biphenyl-2,2'-diol.
