abstract The present invention provides a practical method for producing optically active 3-hydroxypentanenitrile having high optical purity. SOLUTION: An optically active 3-hydroxypentane is obtained by allowing an enzyme having asymmetric hydrolytic ability or asymmetric acylation ability to act on 3-acyloxypentanenitrile (the acyloxy group has 3 or more carbon atoms) or 3-hydroxypentanenitrile. Nitriles or esters of optically active 3-acyloxypentanenitrile are prepared. An enzyme is acted on an acylated product of (R) -3-hydroxypentanenitrile to produce (R) -3-hydroxypentanenitrile having high optical purity (usually 95% ee or more). Furthermore, an enzyme is allowed to act on (S) -3-hydroxypentanenitrile to produce (S) -3-hydroxypentanenitrile having high optical purity (usually 95% ee or more). [Selection diagram] None
