Kind Code: A1 A catalyst for decomposing nitrogen oxides by using a hydrocarbon as a reducing agent in an oxygen-excess atmosphere under the condition of coexistence of moisture. The catalyst comprises palladium and platinum supported on a metal oxide carrier. The supported amount of palladium is 0.01 to 0.1% by weight relative to the carrier, and the supported amount of platinum is 5 to 200% by weight relative to palladium. [Effect] Even in the presence of water vapor, NOx can be decomposed at a high denitration rate using methane as a reducing agent. It is possible to provide an exhaust gas purifying catalyst, particularly a plate-shaped catalyst or a honeycomb-shaped catalyst which is in a practical use form. [Selection diagram] None |
