PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for converting benzene-diols to phenol at a high conversion, selectivity and production rate even when operated in an aqueous solution. SOLUTION: Benzene-diols can be prepared by continuous operation in an aqueous solution at a temperature of 250-500 ° C, a pressure of 1-100 bar and a catalyst based on an element of group VIB or VIII of the periodic table.
