abstract TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a genetically modified fever (Zoysia japonica Steud.). This fever consists of plant cells transformed with a modified oat phytochrome A gene (S598A) in which the serine-598 codon has been replaced by an alanine codon. Expression of the gene significantly reduces the shade avoidance response, such as dwarf internodes and petiole, short leaves, increased divergence and dark green leaf color. The resulting recombinant fever has a robust appearance and is expected to exhibit enhanced resistance to biological and abiotic stresses. Also provided are recombinant DNA constructs comprising the S598A gene, which upon expression induces strong suppression of the shade avoidance response, recombinant plants produced by this method, and breeding seeds obtained from the recombinant plants.
