abstract A lightly crosslinked polymer bead having a void space of 5 μm or less and a method for producing the same are provided. A polymer having 0.5 to 2 mole percent crosslinker, having a diameter not greater than 200 μm, having no void space with a diameter greater than 5 μm, and having less than 5 weight percent extractable Polymer beads containing various organic substances. The method for producing the polymer beads comprises: (a) in a vessel, a monomer comprising at least one vinyl monomer and at least one cross-linking agent; and 0.25 to 1.5 mol% of at least one free radical initiator. (B) introducing an inert gas to remove no more than 5% of oxygen from the mixture and the container, (c) polymerizing the monomer mixture, and (d) dissolving the beads A method comprising a step of washing with a protic organic solvent.
