PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium for MLC, TN or STN display having favorable characteristics. A liquid crystal medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having a positive dielectric anisotropy, comprising a compound of the general formula I Embedded image Wherein X is fluorine, ring A is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene, R is alkyl, oxaalkyl, fluoroalkyl or alkenyl having in each case up to 7 carbon atoms. Has one or more compounds, wherein the medium comprises one or more compounds wherein R in the above formula I is straight-chain alkenyl having 2 to 7 carbon atoms.
