A recombinant poxvirus expressing a gene product of a flavivirus appropriately treated and a method for producing the recombinant poxvirus. A recombinant poxvirus such as vaccinia virus, fowlpox virus and canary virus containing heterologous DNA from flaviviruses such as Japanese encephalitis virus, yellow fever virus and dengue virus is described. In a preferred embodiment, the recombinant poxvirus produces extracellular particles containing neutralizing antibodies, hemagglutination inhibiting antibodies and flavivirus E and M proteins capable of eliciting protective immunity against flavivirus infection. Also described is a vaccine containing a recombinant poxvirus that elicits an immunological response in the vaccinated host animal. [Selection diagram] None |
