abstract An image reading apparatus capable of supporting both a platen scan method and a CVT method realizes high-speed reading without incurring an increase in size and cost of the apparatus. An image reading apparatus which is used together with an image forming apparatus which requires a longer time to form a color image than a time required to form a monochrome image and forms a copying machine reads an image of a document as monochrome information. When determined, the speed at which the document is conveyed by the document conveying means 20 is lower than the speed at which the document is conveyed by the document conveying means 20 when it is determined to be read as monochrome information. The document conveying means 20 is controlled so that the speed does not impair the production efficiency. [Selection diagram] Fig. 1
