abstract An object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing a polyester composition suitable for a magnetic recording medium base film, which is excellent in suppressing a deposited foreign matter caused by aggregation of a catalyst metal and inert fine particles. In a method for producing a polyester composition by reacting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic glycol, an ethylene glycol slurry containing inert fine particles is reacted after completion of an esterification reaction or a transesterification reaction until a polycondensation reaction. And a titanium compound soluble in a polyester as a catalyst and a general formula R 1 OC (O) XP (O) (OR 2 ) 2 (Wherein R 1 and R 2 are an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, X is —CH 2 — or —CH (Y) — (Y is a phenyl group)), and a polyester is formed using the resulting phosphonate compound. By controlling the concentrations of titanium and phosphorus in the composition, the amount of the inert particle slurry added, and the metal concentration in the slurry, the precipitation of the catalyst and the inert particles is suppressed.
