abstract An engine oil having low ash content, excellent cleanability, oxidation stability, and abrasion resistance is provided. The base oil contains (1) (A) a basic calcium salicylate having a total base number of 30 to 95 mgKOH / g in terms of Ca concentration of 300 to 3000 ppm by mass, and a sulfated ash content of 0.4 to 1. 3% by mass or [2] (B) a basic calcium salicylate having a total base number of more than 95 mgKOH / g and not more than 300 mgKOH / g in terms of Ca concentration of 1600 to 3000 ppm by mass, and a sulfated ash content of 0.8% ~ 1.3% by mass.
