| abstract | A portable handheld personal identification device (6) and method for providing secure access to a host facility (4). A biometric sensor system capable of detecting a user-specific biometric feature and providing a biometric signal indicating the detected biometric feature is provided. A processing unit responsive to the biometric signal includes the biometric signal and stored biometric data representing biometric features of the registered individual, i.e., stored biometric features representing registered individual-specific biometric features. The biometric data is compared and a verification signal is provided only if the biometric signal and the biometric data correspond with enough to identify the user as a registered individual. The verification signal (41) includes information indicating a registered individual or device. A communication unit including a transmission circuit (28) is adapted to transmit this verification signal to a remote host system (30). |
