SUMMARY The present invention relates generally to the manufacture and use of matrices having solid fields, gap fields and intercalated polymer networks. In particular, intercalated polymer networks are useful in chemical and biochemical separations, solid phase synthesis, catalysis of chemical reactions, and immobilized enzyme reactors. In one embodiment, the intercalated polymer network comprises a cross-linked polymer that is subjected to interstitial fields from and / or between solid particles. Matrices are characterized by high ligand and functional group densities and by high reversible adsorption and binding capacity, with substantially low non-specific adsorption or interaction with molecules such as proteins. Furthermore, the matrices of the present invention have other properties that are highly desirable in chromatography and catalytic applications, such as high physical stiffness, high ligand density, chemical stability, high ligand reactivity, and rapid exchange and reaction.
