titleOfInvention | Oral delivery of allergens in milk |
abstract | (57) [Summary]nThe present invention relates to the use of milk and milk-related articles as carriers or delivery vehicles for allergens in the process of inducing oral tolerance. In one preferred embodiment, the infant is exposed to primary oral tolerance by providing a cocktail of allergens in the infant formula. In another embodiment, secondary oral tolerance is induced by administering one or more allergens mixed with milk to a mammal of any age. The benefits of using milk as a carrier are evident from experiments, which show that small doses can effectively induce ovalbumin tolerance in allergic dog models. A possible explanation for this is that milk stabilizes the allergen and presents it to the immune system so that the allergen is very potent in effecting an immune tolerance response. |
