titleOfInvention Method for simultaneously producing aliphatic diol and cyclic ether
abstract (57) [Summary]nBy hydrogenating an aliphatic diester or lactone feed such as dimethyl maleate or diethyl maleate containing a small amount of an acidic material such as a monoester, the diol product (eg, butane-1,4-diol) and A method for co-producing a cyclic ether (eg, tetrahydrofuran) is described. It utilizes a plurality of hydrogenation zones (8, 9, 10) connected in series, each containing a packing (12, 17, 24) of granular ester hydrogenation catalyst. The first hydrogenation zone (8) comprises a bed (12) of a catalyst (eg, reduced copper chromite) that is resistant to small amounts of acidic materials, and the second hydrogenation zone (9) comprises a first hydrogenation zone. Includes a bed of catalyst (17) that provides the cyclic ether in higher yield compared to the catalyst of (8). The third hydrogenation zone (10) includes a bed of catalyst (24) that exhibits low selectivity for the conversion of the diester to at least one by-product (e.g., 2,4'-hydroxybutoxy-tetrahydrofuran). The feed is supplied to the first hydrogenation zone (8) as a vapor stream comprising hydrogen and a hydrogenatable material, the zones (8, 9, 10) typically operating under adiabatic conditions. From the third hydrogenation zone (10), a final product stream substantially free of hydrogenatable materials and containing diols, cyclic ethers and other by-products is recovered, but the selectivity to cyclic ethers is reduced. , Higher in the final product stream than in the first intermediate product stream.
