abstract | (57) [Summary]nThe present invention provides a recording medium comprising a substrate having a glossy coating thereon, wherein the glossy substrate comprises alumina particles and a binder, the alumina particles being an aggregate of primary particles. Further, the present invention provides a coating composition containing the above-mentioned alumina particles and a binder, wherein the solid content of alumina in the coating composition is at least about 10 wt%. The present invention further provides a method of preparing a coating composition, the method comprising providing a colloidally stable dispersion of the aforementioned alumina particles, and having a solids content of greater than about 20 wt%; And optionally diluting; and optionally adjusting the pH with a suitable acid or base. Furthermore, the present invention provides a method for producing a recording medium, the method comprising providing a substrate, coating the substrate with the coating composition of the present invention, and optionally calendering the coated substrate.
