titleOfInvention Network processor processing complex and method
abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scalable switch architecture used in a data communication network, capable of increasing the processing speed of transferred data while resizing support functions to a range of various potential requests. thing. A network processor useful in a network switching device and a method of operating such a processor are disclosed. The cooperation of an embedded processor complex formed on a common semiconductor substrate with a set of peripherals enhances data flow processing and flexibility. An interface processor provides data paths for inbound and outbound data flow and operates under the control of instructions stored in an instruction store formed on the semiconductor substrate. On the other hand, storage of the portion of the data flow during transmission is provided by the interface between the memory peripheral and the external memory element.
