abstract | (57) Summary Methods and constructs are provided for the introduction of multiple genes into plants using a single transformation event. Coordinated gene expression in this cassette producing a protein with a native amino acid sequence is achieved by the production of one polycistronic mRNA containing a separate translation initiation signal for each enzyme coding region. The bicistronic construct includes a single 5 'promoter, protein coding sequence 1, IRES, protein coding sequence 2 and a single 3' polyadenylation sequence. For polycistronic constructs, additional cassettes of protein coding sequences, where each coding region is preceded by an IRES, can be inserted between protein coding sequence 2 and the polyadenylation sequence. |
