abstract An exposed lens retroreflective article (10) comprising a layer of an optical element (12) partially embedded in a binder layer (14). The reflective layer (16) is functionally located behind the optical element (12), and the colored layer (18) is located between the reflective layer (16) and the optical element (12). The colored layer (18) is colored by a dye covalently bonded to the polymer. An exposed lens retroreflective article can retain its color and retroreflective ability well after multiple industrial washing cycles. Therefore, the article is particularly suitable for use in clothing such as a firefighter's jacket.
