(57) Abstract: Provided is an improved method for stabilizing a vinyl aromatic monomer. SOLUTION: A mixture of a vinyl aromatic monomer and a 7-aryl-quinone methide, in which the 7-aryl-quinone methide is present at a concentration sufficient to prevent polymerization of the vinyl aromatic monomer, is heated to form a vinyl aromatic monomer. The monomer and 7-aryl-quinone methide are separated to form a top vinyl aromatic monomer distillate and bottoms, and the 4-tert- at a concentration sufficient to prevent polymerization of the vinyl aromatic monomer. Butyl catechol is introduced into the distillate, At that time, 4-tert-butylcatechol is introduced into the distillate such that essentially no 4-tert-butylcatechol enters the bottoms. |
