titleOfInvention Catalytic converter
abstract (57) [Summary] In an engine exhaust purification system using an HC trap catalyst, HC desorption from the HC trap is started before the three-way catalyst reaches the activation temperature after the cold start of the engine. HC that could easily be discharged later could not be sufficiently purified. SOLUTION: In a catalytic converter having a catalyst carrier coated with an HC trapping agent, one or more slits are formed so as to cross the cells of the catalyst carrier. The slit blocks the heat transfer in the catalyst carrier before and after the slit and suppresses the heat conduction to the downstream, so that the temperature rise of the catalyst carrier becomes slow, As the amount of trapped C increases, the amount of increase in the temperature of the catalyst metal increases, and the treatment efficiency at the time of HC desorption improves. Further, the exhaust gas that has entered the cell generates turbulence in the slit portion and increases the chance that the exhaust gas comes into contact with the HC trapping agent, so that the HC trap performance is improved.
