abstract (57) [Summary] [PROBLEMS] To reduce coupling loss between optical elements and to reduce alignment between optical elements when assembling modules. Provided are a spot size converter, an optical coupling element, and an optical element module that reduce the time required for assembling work. SOLUTION: In a photonic crystal 1 or 11 in which a periodic structure in which two or more kinds of media having different refractive indexes have a photonic band gap is formed, a frequency within a photonic band gap region of the photonic crystal is provided. And a waveguide formed so as not to satisfy the arrangement of the periodic structure so as to transmit light having the following structure. And the spot diameter of the light emitted from the emission port of the waveguide is set to be larger than the wavelength of the light.
