(57) [Problem] To provide an anionic surface sizing agent which has less foaming even in a high concentration coating liquid and is excellent in size, and a printing paper obtained by using the same. SOLUTION: A hydrophobic low molecular weight compound (alkyl ketene dimer or a higher alcohol having 8 to 22 carbon atoms) and / or a hydrophobic oligomer (olefin oligomer or hydrocarbon oligomer having no functional group and having a molecular weight of 20). 0 to 2000, a pour point of 30 ° C. or lower) is a hydrophobic group-containing polycarboxylic acid type anionic papermaking surface sizing agent obtained by performing a polymerization reaction. This surface sizing agent can suppress foaming of the coating liquid, and has a high degree of sizing and is excellent in inkjet suitability.
