(57) [Problem] To provide a new use of a tea polyphenol obtained by extracting tea (Camellia sinensis) with regard to metabolism of iron in blood. [Problem solving means] Tea polyphenol, preferably (-)- Provided is a prophylactic / therapeutic agent for liver damage caused by excess iron containing 50% or more of epicatechin gallate and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate in a total amount as an active ingredient. Oral ingestion of high blood iron concentrations removes excess blood iron and lowers blood iron concentrations. When taken together with iron when the blood iron concentration is relatively low, it has a stabilizing effect (control effect) that promotes iron absorption and can suppress a decrease in blood iron concentration. Moreover, at this time, there is no significant effect on the number of red blood cells and the hemoglobin concentration. |
