abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further improve insufficient gloss while maintaining rapid ink permeability to an ink receiving layer of a coating agent for a cast layer, and to provide a coating liquid which is particularly excellent in color developability. A coating composition for an ink jet recording medium, which can form a stable film without agglomeration and hardly causes the silica to fall off from the coating layer. SOLUTION: In the presence of an emulsifier (A) containing a radically polymerizable emulsifier having a sulfonic acid group, an unsaturated monomer (B) having a silyl group and an unsaturated monomer having a 6-membered ring in a side chain. The monomer (C) and, if necessary, another radical polymerizable unsaturated monomer (D) copolymerizable with (B) and (C) are emulsion-polymerized, and the particle diameter is 100 nm or less. The present invention relates to the use of a composition containing a synthetic resin emulsion and colloidal silica as a glossy layer coating for an ink jet recording medium.
