abstract (57) [Summary] [PROBLEMS] To provide an information recording / reproducing apparatus capable of discharging an information recording medium in a short time in response to a request for discharging the information recording medium during a formatting process. SOLUTION: When there is a request to eject an information recording medium during recording of temporary data by initialization means, formatting processing is interrupted (step 422), and an address acquisition means removes a specific area for file management information. In the recording area, the outermost address among the addresses at which data is recorded is obtained (step 423), and temporary lead-out information is recorded following the address position by the termination information recording means (step 423). Step 435) eliminates the need for the process of filling the space between the address position and the specific area with temporary data.
