titleOfInvention Electrophoretic display
abstract (57) [Summary] A high contrast is obtained without considering a refractive index difference between a colorless and transparent insulating substrate and a dispersion layer. A colorless and transparent insulating substrate having a convex curved surface having a convex lens function and facing a lower electrode provided on a lower substrate is provided. An upper electrode 6 is provided on both sides or around the insulating substrate 4. And the upper substrate 5 supporting the upper electrode 6 has a light shielding property. The upper electrode 6 and the lower electrode 3 are substantially parallel to make the electric field strength when a voltage is applied uniform. A colorless and transparent fluid 11 containing electrophoretic particles 12 is sealed in a space 10 partitioned by the partition 8 between the upper and lower electrodes 3 and 6 and the insulating substrate 4. The side surface 8a of the partition 8 is set at an inclination angle θ smaller than the critical angle. The electrophoretic particles 12 have the same charge and are colored. The colored insulating layer 9 is provided on the lower electrode 3 and the side surface 8 a of the partition 8, and is colored in a color to be compared with the electrophoretic particles 12.
