abstract (57) [Problem] To provide a useful novel biphenyl compound and a method for producing the same. A coupling reaction between 4-halo-2-fluorobenzotrifluoride and 1-halo-4- (cyanomethyl) -2-fluorobenzene is carried out, A novel 4- (cyanomethyl) -2-fluoro-3′-fluoro-4 ′-(trifluoromethyl) biphenyl can be produced. In consideration of the yield and economy of the coupling reaction, both the halogen at the 4-position of the first starting compound and the halogen at the 1-position of the second starting compound are preferably bromine in terms of handling, and are recommended. . This novel compound is also expected to be used as a material for organic electroluminescent displays in light-emitting devices and as an intermediate for medical and agricultural chemicals, functional materials, and the like.
