[PROBLEMS] To provide a negative electrode active material capable of forming a lithium secondary battery having a large capacity and good cycle characteristics, and a simple method for producing the same. In addition, by forming a water-based lithium secondary battery using the negative electrode active material, a lithium secondary battery with low cost, high safety, large capacity, and good cycle characteristics is provided. SOLUTION: The negative electrode active material is a lithium vanadium composite oxide having a basic composition of LiV 2 O 4 and a spinel structure. Further, the production method includes a raw material mixing step of mixing a lithium compound serving as a lithium source, a vanadium compound serving as a vanadium source, and a carbon material to obtain a raw material mixture, and firing the raw material mixture to form a lithium vanadium composite oxide.
