abstract (57) [Summary] Every year, West Group's expert classifiers manually translate as many as 350,000 judicial opinion headnotes or summaries into approximately 82,000 classes of the Key Number System (130). Classify by. Most headnotes are classified based on the memory of the classifier, but there are a considerable number that are difficult and expensive to classify manually. Accordingly, the present inventor has devised a system (120), method and software that facilitates manual classification (120) of headnotes and documents that are usually difficult to classify, especially headnotes. One exemplary system includes an ordered list of unclassified head notes (140) and one or more candidate classes, and candidate classes and candidates combined with adjacent classes in the classification system (100).
