titleOfInvention | Protein co-expression |
abstract | (57) Abstract: The present invention relates to a material and a method for producing a transformed plant and plant tissue capable of expressing a high level of a stable protein localized in a plant cell in the form of a protein body. . It is disclosed that transformed plants that co-express high levels of both the 15 kD and 10 kD zein proteins accumulate high levels of the protein as protein bodies in the vegetative tissue of the plant. Transgenic plants that co-express 15 kD and 10 kD zein proteins are useful for providing feed crops with increased levels of sulfur-containing amino acids such as methionine as feed for animals that feed on such crops. The present invention also relates to a transformed plant or plant tissue containing a stable protein body composed of a heterogeneous proteinaceous substance. In some embodiments, the stable protein bodies are those expressed in plants or plant tissues as fusion proteins consisting of a protein or peptide artificially linked to a zein protein. The protein bodies of the present invention are resistant to luminin digestion or environmental degradation. |
