titleOfInvention | Method of formulating a gas generating composition |
abstract | (57) SUMMARY A preferred gas generant composition comprises a binder of 5-aminotetrazole nitrate and an oxidizing agent. The oxidizing agent may be selected from the group comprising non-metallic and metallic nitrates, nitrites, chlorates, chlorites, perchlorates and oxides. 5-Aminotetrazole nitrate is characterized as an oxygen-rich fuel and is therefore considered to be a self-deflagrating fuel. However, for some applications, the use of an oxidizing agent is preferred to set the oxygen balance. Methods for formulating the compositions are also described. These compositions are particularly suitable for airbag inflation and seatbelt pretensioners in crew restraints. |
