abstract | The device according to the invention comprises a detector for radiation such as neutron radiation (15) and a detector for other types of radiation such as gamma radiation (16). In the method according to the invention, the combustion rate of the nuclear fuel (26) is determined based on the measured radiation and it is assumed that the nuclear fuel has a predetermined composition. Then, based on the assumed composition and the determined combustion ratio, a value for the other radiation is estimated, and if the estimated value and the measured value are comparable, the assumed composition for nuclear fuel is used.
