abstract SUMMARY The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for removing at least a portion of at least one contaminant in an exhaust gas stream containing exhaust gas generated by fuel combustion in a lean burn engine. The device of the present invention includes at least one device for removing at least a portion of at least one of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter in the exhaust gas, and the removal device has an inlet and an outlet. And a catalyst for selective catalytic reduction, a particulate trap, a catalytic coated granular trap for selective catalytic reduction, a nitrogen oxide accumulation and reduction catalyst, an oxidation catalyst and a three-way catalyst, and the At least a portion of the exhaust gas stream is positioned to pass through the removal device; and further includes at least one device for generating a non-thermal plasma in at least a portion of the exhaust gas stream. At least a portion of the exhaust gas stream is exposed to the non-thermal plasma, and at least a portion of the portion of the exhaust gas stream exposed to the non-thermal plasma is exposed to at least one of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter. The at least one part is introduced into the exhaust gas stream upstream or inside said at least one device.
