titleOfInvention Non-invasive monitoring of cardiac output and lung function using respiratory gas analysis techniques and physiological models
abstract (57) [Summary] The cardiac output monitoring system (10) includes a respiratory flow meter (14) and a gas analyzer (20, 22) to measure each characteristic of each respiratory gas non-invasively. The cardiac output can be determined for each breath by applying the Fick principle. The gas analyzer measures the individual characteristics of the respiratory gas mixture of a known number of possible components to provide multiple real-time breath-to-breath gas concentrations such as inhalation and end-tidal concentrations of any component of the respiratory gas mixture. Have the function of simultaneously quantifying The respiratory flow meter determines the volume and mass flow of any single / plural gas calculated from the product of the measured total respiratory flow and the measured volume concentration in real time for each breath. From these measurements, cardiac output can be determined on a breath-by-breath basis by applying appropriate numerical algorithms based on Fick's principle, such as correcting for physiological conditions such as short circuits and dead spaces.
