abstract (57) Abstract: An intelligent system for non-invasively measuring blood analytes that operates on the near-infrared absorption spectrum of skin tissue in vivo. The hierarchical architecture uses a pattern classification engine to adapt the calibration to the structural properties and physiological states of the patient as revealed in the absorption spectrum. Using a priori information about the major sources of sample variability, a general category of patients is established. Applying specific category specific calibration schemes reduces spectroscopic interference, resulting in improved prediction accuracy and sparing calibration. Two classification rules are disclosed. The first rule assumes that these classes are mutually exclusive and apply calibration models specific to different subject categories. The second rule uses fuzzy set theory to generate calibration models and blood analyte predictions. Thus, each calibration sample has the opportunity to affect more than one calibration model according to its class membership. Similarly, predictions from two or more calibrations are combined by fuzzy elimination to produce the final blood analyte prediction.
