abstract | (57) [Summary]nThe present invention relates to a method for controlling the spread of recombinant DNA molecules between sexually compatible plants having different genetic compositions. The present invention discloses the production of a transgenic plant containing a recombinant trait of interest or interest linked to a repressible lethal gene. This lethal gene is blocked by the action of a repressor molecule produced by expression of a repressor gene located at a different locus. The lethal phenotype is only expressed after sequestration of the repressible lethal gene construct and the repressor gene following meiosis. The present invention can be used in both open pollination and hybrid seed production systems, and to maintain genetic purity by blocking unintentional introgression from plants lacking the specific repressor gene. It can also be used. The present invention includes a method for imparting a desired trait to the production of an environment-responsive heterologous protein, the genetic material used to impart the trait, and novel plants and products obtained by the method. |
